Emerson Unveils 'Fleet Management Edition' as Next Generation Software Platform of Ovation®

Upgrade Manages Fleet-Wide Power Production for Increased Profit Through Improved Performance and Operational Effectiveness

PITTSBURGH, PA (December 10, 2002) - Emerson Process Management today announced that its Power & Water Solutions division, formerly Westinghouse Process Control, has unveiled the next generation software platform for its Ovation® Information & Control System, a key component of Emerson's PlantWeb® digital plant architecture for the power generation industry.

The Ovation Fleet Management Edition's (FME) seamless, fleet-wide connectivity provides power producers the capability to centralize supervisory control, monitoring, diagnostics and performance analysis functions across multiple generating units. Ovation FME also gives users the opportunity to perform industry-specific, fleet-based optimization through new and expanded SmartProcess® Optimization Software modules, and to integrate advanced control applications through the Advanced Process Control (APC) Tool Kit, which includes automatic and bumpless adaptive tuning tools as well as fully integrated neural network, model predictive control and fuzzy logic algorithms.

By providing the ability to view, analyze, optimize and manage the operations of all units in a specific fleet simultaneously from one location, Ovation FME greatly advances centralized engineering and troubleshooting capabilities, and facilitates increased interaction between plant operations and corporate energy traders for improved decision making and increased revenue opportunities.

"We anticipate that a large number of generating plants will continue to change hands in the next few years - which will fuel the current trend U.S. producers have established of standardizing on automation technologies to achieve competitive advantages," said Ron Oscher, Marketing vice president, Power & Water Solutions division of Emerson Process Management. "Ovation FME offers power producers the control industry's most realistic approach to managing disparate generating units within a fleet for improved performance and increased profit — and it's built on proven technologies that are available for application right now."

Ovation FME also integrates high-speed interfaces to turbine control platforms, including MHI, Toshiba, and Siemens, in addition to the existing GE Mark V/VI interface. Building on Ovation's flexible open design, Ovation FME's expanded turbine control capabilities allow Ovation to serve as the focal point for all plant control, reducing operator workload and storing key operational data and trend information in one system for easy comprehensive analysis.

"Ovation FME furthers the possibilities a truly open control architecture like Ovation - designed specifically for the kind of dynamic processes found in power generation - can bring to today's power producer," Oscher said. "It's also a clear illustration of how standardized automation can help to deliver the integration of boardroom and plant necessary for success in the competitive energy marketplace."

The Ovation System uses an open architecture approach that helps to eliminate concerns about technological obsolescence and dependence on proprietary systems. Operating on a high-speed, high-capacity network, Ovation was the first system built completely to open industry standards. It uses commercially available hardware and allows easy integration of a customer's existing IT products and components, while maintaining process security.
